Do your remember this from growing up?
Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go
It followed her to school one day
Which was against the rules
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school
And so, the teacher turned it out
But still, it lingered near
And waited patiently 'til Mary did appear
It was a poem that was written by Sarah Josepha Hale on May 24, 1830. I was wondering if it had been written as a subtle portrayal of Jesus Christ, who is called the Lamb of God. But apparently Sarah was a schoolteacher 200 years ago and a student named Mary did have her little lamb follow her to school. She snuck it in the classroom, but it was discovered and the lamb ended up outside patiently waiting for Mary at the end of the school day. It is a cute story, but I still see some of the person of this Jesus of the Bible in this poem. This Jesus is named the Lamb of God, and the Bible declares him sinless…as white as snow. And he is the one who promised us that he would be with those who love him…every day and in every place they go. And there are places where he is not welcome…that he is seen as a distraction, a bother to some. But he is always there, lingering around waiting for you and me to “appear” and receive his love and kindness and forgiveness. I’m glad Sarah Hale wrote that…it is a cute and gentle poem. But to me, I see my best friend ever and will always be reminded of his holiness, his abiding presence and his patient waiting for me to come to him and embrace him in my life. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
John 1:29 NLT The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Remember I’m praying for you!
