Daily Devotional #1,577

Charlton Heston is one of my favorite movie actors. He really started his road to fame back in the 1950s playing Moses in “The Ten Commandments” and then as Judah Ben Hur, as a contemporary of Jesus Christ in the movie “Ben Hur”. I saw an interview with Heston’s kids talking about their dad when he was filming “Ben Hur” in Italy. He had to be in really good shape for the movie and so every day his kids said that they watched their movie star dad step on the scale and weigh himself. I started a weight loss journey and I thought if Charlton Heston thought it was important to weigh each day, I would do the same. So every day that I have a scale close by, I step on it and get a realistic report on how I’m doing. I don’t always like what that scale tells me...but I’m not foolish enough to think that it is lying to me! I’ve come to realize that the Bible is like that scale. The Apostle Paul said that the scriptures teach us what is true and make us realize what is wrong in our lives. And it gives us an honest picture of who we really are. Sometimes I get on that scale in the morning and
realize that I’ve not been following the weight loss plan...I can see it right there in the numbers. And there are times when I read the Bible and again I realize that I’ve not been following God’s plan for us humans. That scale in the bathroom is not trying to lie to me...or to hurt me. It is letting me know the truth about me...and reminding me that it really did matter to eat that bag of chips last night! In the same way, God’s word gives us the absolute truth...about the world, about sin and about you and me. God is not trying to hurt us through his Bible, he uses it to correct us when we are wrong and to teach us to do what is right. And what is right is what God declares right. And the end game? To prepare and equip you and me to live life to the fullest and make our lives count for today and tomorrow and for all eternity. That bathroom scale will let you know what you need to do to slim down to a healthy weight. And that Bible will give you all you need to live a healthy life in God’s sight and make your life count big time for all eternity.

Here’s our Bible verse for today...

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. (17) God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Remember I’m praying for you!
