Daily Devotional #1,552

My wife and I spent Sunday afternoon with our grandkids at their house and after dinner we were driving home and my wife looked at the fields we were passing and she said “Look how dry everything is getting already!” I agreed and said “And the bad thing is that we might not even see rain for months now.” Less than 24 hours later we were in our backyard watching a fantastic lightning storm and seeing the rain just pour down on the lawn. I think everyone was caught by surprise on that one! I thought about the account of when Jesus and his disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee one evening and Jesus began to sleep in the boat. The weather just went crazy, and the wind and the waves began to swamp their boat and the disciples shouted to Jesus to wake up because they all were going to drown! Jesus just answered them with the words “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” And Jesus just told the wind and the waves to knock it off…and instantly there was a calm like nothing had happened. The storms in life don’t come with a lot of warning. All of a sudden there they are, and we can feel like we have been ambushed and are going to be dragged under the waves of fear, discouragement or even despair. We need to understand that we will encounter storms in this life. And the waves and the wind will threaten us, and the fear may begin to choke us…but we need to remember that Jesus is there in the middle of the storm. The key is to make sure that Jesus is there in the boat with you. And when the storm comes, tell him you need help. And if you have a relationship with this Jesus, you can come in faith instead of fear. Remember he will be your best friend if you let him. So, nurture that relationship and become confident that when the wind and the waves begin to pound you, he will be the anchor of your soul. And he will make sure that you won’t lose to that storm. Connect with him who loves you so much…because you never know when that next storm will hit. And you and he will face the waves and wind together.

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Matthew 8:23-27 NLT Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. (24) Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. (25) The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” (26) Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. (27) The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”

Remember I’m praying for you!
