Daily Devotional #1,538

I like grocery shopping and I end up doing a good share of it at our house. And because I do that, I have seen first-hand how grocery and household prices have just exploded over the past couple of years. I often stand in line behind a family that has a grocery cart full of food and household items and I am always stunned when I see that their shopping is going to cost them several hundred dollars. And I’ve seen too many times people having to give items back to make their purchase possible. I have seen reenactments of people doing that online and then a person behind them steps us and just says “I’m going to pay for you today.” And the person receiving that is usually overwhelmed, knowing that they couldn’t pay that bill. And I’m sure there are times when that happens in real life. But every time I see that played out, I think about our position as humans here on planet earth. The Bible says that each one of us has a debt that we cannot pay. And often people just don’t even consider that as real. And with that attitude they will end up like those folks who fill their shopping carts and when the total comes up on the register…they have no resources to pay the bill. All of us are there. The Bible says that the price for sin…is death. And it says that death is what we earned with our sin. And we have no way to pay for that. But as we stand in that line, waiting to hear that awful news of the debt that we cannot pay, right beside us is Jesus, who reminds us that he wants to take that bill that you and I owe God and rip it up…because he has already paid for it on the cross on that Good Friday of Easter Week. We have no resources to pay what we owe, but God offers us a free gift…eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The good news is that the price due for sin has not gone up. The bad news is that it is still death. But standing right there with us is one who reminds us that we are so loved by him that he has already paid…and that if we will accept his gift of eternal life…our debt is paid in full! And no matter how much inflation continues to rise…his payment will always be enough…for eternity!

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Romans 6:23 NLT For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Remember I’m praying for you,
PJ
