Some of our folks ran a yard sale for the church yesterday. Our neighborhood sets aside a day when everyone
who can is encouraged to put stuff out for their own yard sale. The advantage to that is that people will come
from all over just to go from house to house to see if they can find a hidden treasure. When I arrived, I saw that
they had sold a good deal of stuff and that things were beginning to slow down. I couldn’t help myself and I
ended up going through stuff and yeah…I bought something. I looked over what was left, and I thought about
what people must have thought about these items when they first bought them in a store somewhere. They were
something that they just had to have. They had value to these folks…and now, well they were donated by
people who just wanted to get rid of them. And the hope was that someone might find some value in them and
offer a few bucks for them. I thought about that later. What about us? We like to think that we are pretty
valuable folks ourselves. And when we think about all the wear and tear that sin and just life have had on us,
we all wonder if we really are worth something to anybody. But then God comes to us and tells us that he wants
us to be his children. And the reason that he does that is because he loves us. And God doesn’t reach into his
heavenly pockets for a few bucks to purchase us. Instead, he takes his one and only son and he goes in our
place to pay for our sin. And when we accept that forgiveness that was purchased there on the cross, we are
declared by God, not this world, to be his beloved children. So, as you travel on your journey through life
today, never forget that you are not set aside as worn out and past usefulness. God saw and continues to see you
as so valuable, and he points to the cross and says “That’s how much I value you. No matter what anyone else
may say, you are my precious child…now! And it is all because of my deep love and incomprehensible grace
that I have for you.” You are not a cast off nobody. You are someone special to the God who created it all.
Live well with your Father today!
Here’s our Bible verse for today…
1 John 3:1 NLT See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
Remember I’m praying for you,
