He was just a kid when he went to war. It was a history-changing day. He became a military man and then
eventually became king over his country. He honored God and then found ways to dishonor him. He had an
affair with a married woman, who was the wife of one of his military commanders. She became pregnant and
he tried to finagle a way to make it look like it was her husband’s baby. But he couldn’t make it work. So, he
had her husband killed by putting him on the front lines and then everyone retreating without the man knowing
what was happening. His own family rebelled and plotted against him. And God…he called him “a man after
my own heart”. And his name was King David who would become a key figure in the linage leading to Jesus’
birth and life with us on earth. How could God call this guy “a man after my own heart”? Because David, who
was terribly flawed in so many ways…loved God. And he learned to be honest with God about his own sin. He
understood God’s grace. That God’s love and saving act is not anything anyone of us could ever earn. It is a
gift from God to anyone who would choose to receive it. And David shared his heart with wonderful writings
inspired by God’s own spirit. They were songs and now poetry to our ears and life and hope to our hearts.
David loved God and he wrote a psalm that rings out across the centuries about God’s love and protection and
provision for those who will not give up on him. And it goes like this… “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not
want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest
a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth
over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the
LORD forever.” God will never give up on you…and the only way you can be lost to him is to give up on him.
No matter what…just keep coming back to the God who calls to your heart each day with his love and kindness
and forgiveness.
