Daily Devotional #1,468

I read an interesting opinion piece online yesterday. I’m a football fan and the headline went something like “FOOTBALL PLAYERS IN THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME THAT SHOULDN’T BE THERE”. I thought that was a pretty provocative title and so I took a look. They had a number of players that I had watched play, some even as a kid, and this guy made the case for each one of them as to why they shouldn’t be in the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. I read it and there were all kinds of reasons for them not being there and he did a pretty good job of undermining their achievements or their personal character. But as I read that article, I couldn’t help but think “What if God used the same kind of process for me getting into heaven?” Or any of us for that matter? As I thought about my life and some of the poor choices I’ve made and sins that I’ve committed I realized again that I don’t deserve to be in God’s heaven. And on this side of Easter, it is a great reminder to us all that when Jesus did die on Good Friday, he died not for good people. He died for sinners. And that we were utterly helpless. There was no way we could earn, buy or beg our way into heaven. And Jesus died on that day for people who were in rebellion against God. And that is the majesty of God’s rescue plan. That we are all in the same boat…and that boat is sinking fast! And there is only one way to be saved from that disaster that sin creates for us all. And that is to just receive the grace and mercy of the God who for some reason is just in love with us and wants us, who have been rebels, to be with him in heaven, forever. So never forget how much you and I owe God. And remember the thing that he wants most from us is simply our hearts. Because once our heart is given over to him…everything else will follow!

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Romans 5:6-8 NLT When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. (7) Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. (8) But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Remember I’m praying for you…
