Daily Devotional #1,442

We had a bunch of kids playing a game at our AWANA club the other night. We were playing “snowball fight”! We had the kids wad up dozens of sheets of white paper and then divided them up into two teams. There was a rope laid across the room and neither team could cross that line. When we said “go” the two teams picked up as many snowballs as possible and threw them over to the other side. Snowballs traded sides for a few minutes until time ran out. At that point we counted the snowballs and the one with the least on their side was the winner. When we did the first game, one side obviously won, but the cry went out “That wasn’t fair!” We couldn’t figure out how it could have been unfair, but that’s how they felt. I thought about that later…a lot of us think that life isn’t fair in some way for us. And they may be right. Why should some people have a more challenging time in life than others? I don’t know. But I know that life doesn’t feel fair to all of us at times. But I am so glad that God is not fair to us. Think about it. The Bible says that we are sinners…and we are guilty of sin. No one has to sin…it is a choice. But…all of us do sin! But the unfair part of all of this is that we don’t have to pay for our own sins. Jesus died on the cross and it was a case of the innocent dying for the guilty. That’s not fair…that’s God’s grace to us. And even then, he doesn’t force us to accept his gift. If we want to pay for our own sins…they we can do that…forever. But what sense does that make? God is not fair in that he loves us when we don’t love him. He is faithful when we are faithless. He opens the door to heaven when we only want to go our own way. It isn’t fair…and I am so thankful for that. Life can be hard, and it will be unfair in our world. But remember that God is right there with us. And he chooses to be unfair, because he loves you and me and all the people who have ever walked on planet earth with a love we cannot begin to grasp. And Jesus takes the punishment on the cross that he didn’t deserve, that we might have the forgiveness that we don’t deserve. It is a great deal…don’t miss out on it!

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Romans 5:15-16 NLT But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. (16) And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins.

Remember I’m praying for you…
With love, PJ
