The old storyteller, Paul Harvey, told the story of the man who refused to go to church with his family on Christmas Eve because he just didn’t believe in that stuff about God coming to the people of earth as a man. They left and he began to read his paper when he heard a thud against the living room window…and then another and then another. He went out to investigate and there in the snow were a group of small birds who had been attracted by the light of his living room and had crashed into the window in their attempt to get inside. A number of them had hit the window and they were all kind of huddled in the snow under the large window. He had a small barn next to the house and he walked over and opened the doors and turned on the lights to try to draw the birds into safety and warmth. They just sat cold in the snow. He tried to shoo them in but they flew up and then back down to the same spot. He decided to make a trail of bird seed from where they were to the barn door. But there was no movement. Here they were freezing in the snow when there was safety just yards away. They just didn’t get it. He thought the only way that I could tell them about the safety of my barn would be to become a bird and point them to it or just lead them over there. As that thought passed through his mind, the bells of the church where his family were, began ringing in Christmas day. And in that moment, he got his first glimpse as to what Christmas was all about. That maybe he was like these birds…just banging his head against something that would never bring him happiness or security. But somewhere else there was everything he had ever needed or wanted. And God had indeed done what the man knew needed to take place. That he became one of the ones that he hungered to save. And he arrived here on this planet as a little baby in a little town called Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago. Never forget what Christmas really is…a rescue plan for we who are dying to bring us to a place of life. And we found out about it because God became one of us to not only tell us…but to make it possible for us to go where we really always wanted to be. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Galatians 4:4-7 NLT But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. (5) God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. (6) And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” (7) Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.
Remember I’m praying for you!
