On June 3rd, 1942 the Battle of Midway began and it served as the turning point in the war in the Pacific against the Imperial Japanese Navy. If you have ever seen a movie about the battle, there will always be a scene of one American navy pilot that was shot down and was just floating in the middle of the battle. All around him were enemy ships and American airplanes who ended up sinking four Japanese fleet carriers. The pilot was Ensign George Gay. He was a graduate of Texas A&M and when he recovered from his wounds he was sent back to A & M to talk to the students who were all in military training by this time. He told his story of how his plane was shot down and he survived the crash into the Pacific and then was stranded in the middle of this massive battle. He was totally surrounded by enemy ships and there wasn't a thing that he could do. But then from the skies came the American dive bombers and they successfully sunk four carriers, which had been a part of the task force that had attacked Pearl Harbor six months before. Ensign Gay described the battle that was being fought and won and how he was rescued. I remember my dad telling me about the day that this pilot talked to the entire student body and I always wondered what it must have felt like to see that battle going on all around you and you were just helpless in watching others defeat the enemy and bring you to safety. As I got older, I realized that I had a similar experience of one who went to war for me while I was totally helpless. The Bible says that while I and the rest of humanity was powerless to save themselves, Jesus died for all of us. And on that cross that Jesus died, the love of God was demonstrated and proved to all of the human race. We all are like Ensign Gay...we are just bobbing around helpless, waiting for some kind of rescue. And the only rescue that will bring us home is the truth that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. So when you feel unloved or unnoticed remember that there was a mighty battle that took place with the sole purpose of rescuing you and me and all those who wanted to get out of the endless sea of our brokenness and pain. The battle has been won...and the rescue is under way for all those who want to join in the victory party. Don't be left behind...
Here's our Bible verse for today...
Rom 5:6-8 For at just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. (7) Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. (8) But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Remember I'm praying for you!
