One of the things that we all take for granted in our culture is...salt! Yeah, we don’t think about how wonderful salt is. For us it seems to be everywhere and is one of the cheapest things to buy. But that wasn’t always the case. I ran across a story of an ancient king who once asked his three daughters how much they loved him. One daughter said she loved him more than all the gold in the world. One said she loved him more than all the silver in the world. The youngest daughter said she loved him more than salt. The king was not pleased with this answer. But the cook overheard the conversation, so the next day he prepared a good meal for the king but left out the salt. The food was so insipid that the king couldn't eat it. Then he understood what his daughter meant. He understood the value of salt. In the ancient world salt was a valuable and scarce commodity. It was used as currency in some countries even into modern times. I heard that Roman soldiers were often paid in salt. It was so prized that it could be used by them or easily sold. That was so common that the receiving of salt for your work was where our word “salary” came from. And from that the saying came that one was worth their salt. In the sermon on the mount Jesus told his followers that they were the salt of earth. To him and to heaven and to our world...his followers were people of great worth. And they would bring flavor and goodness and richness to people’s lives as they continued to love God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength and then to love each other as he has loved us. He warned us though, should we lose our “saltiness” that we would become good for nothing. Like salt that no longer has its saltiness, we have no impact or goodness to bring to the world. So, remember that as a follower of Jesus...stay salty by staying close to him and in that way you will help to bring
what the world not only needs, but actually wants!
Here’s our Bible verse for today...
Matthew 5:13-15 NLT “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. (14) “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. (15) No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.
Remember I’m praying for you!
