Daily Devotional #1,602

I was talking to a friend the other day and I found out that they knew my next-door neighbors. My neighbors follow this Jesus of the Bible, and they really are great folks. They are both in the medical field and have had years of training, experience and leadership. They have been a regular part of the Christian disaster relief group called Samaritan’s Purse And when the call goes out, and they can put their profession on hold, they will sign up to go where they are needed, usually a disaster area. They pay for their own flights to the area in need and then back home again. On one occasion, they had been in the eastern United States and responded to the call to serve. When they got back home, I asked them how it had all gone. I assumed with their medical experience they had been helping run a clinic or something like that. But when I asked, they said that they had all the
medical people they could use, so they ended up hauling away junk, nailing things together and doing menial sounding stuff. I really liked that. Others were doing the jobs that they had trained for in their work life, and they ended up going to and cleaning up after a hurricane. And they came back excited that they were able to be a part of that. I thought about that. Every time they can go, they pay their way and then take whatever job is needed, and they come back excited about doing what they feel God opened up for them. There is an old saying that the hardest instrument to play is second fiddle. So many want to serve, but it needs to be at the top of the pyramid...not doing the ordinary, run of the mill work. But sometimes that’s what God calls us to do. We are to lead lives worthy of the calling that God has given us. And to do that, it takes humility. I think about that when I talk with my neighbors. They are people who have this godly meekness and bring with them patience and gentleness. The Bible reminds us that Christ, who was God, humbled himself to become a man and beyond that went to a criminal’s death for us on the cross. I like the example my neighbors are giving to me, and I want to be like them. So, like my neighbors, you and I need to strive to be humble and willing to serve the King of Kings in any way he calls us to. And remember, when you do that, you follow in the footsteps of our Savior
and Lord. And that has to put a smile on God’s face!

Here’s our Bible verse for today...

Ephesians 4:1-2 NLT Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. (2) Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.

Remember I’m praying for you!
With love, PJ
