My Mom used to tell me the story of the first time that we traveled to the Grand Canyon. We parked and walked up to the railing. My mother said that my dad lifted me up in his arms and let me see the huge valley-like gorge that spread below us. She said that I just looked at this massive natural wonder and finally shook my head and said “This is big enough to hold all my toys!” Now I can guarantee you that I didn’t have an abundance of toys, but in my mind that was the best reference I could come up with to describe how huge this canyon was! When we get to know this God of creation, we begin to see how great and wonderous and powerful is our God. And yet all we can do is to think of him in the context of what we know here on earth. One of the songs that I love to sing in worship is one by Chris Tomlin that is titled “How Great Is Our God”.
The splendour of a King
Clothed in Majesty
Let all the earth rejoice
All the earth rejoice
He wraps Himself in light
And darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice
Trembles at His voice
How great is our God
Sing with me, how great is our God
And all will see how great
How great is our God
Even with all the wonder and understanding we have of this God of the Bible, our estimation of him is probably a lot like my comment on the Grand Canyon being able to hold my toys. We need to come to grips with the truth that we really have no idea how great our God is. How much bigger and glorious he is than anything we can use to compare him to. That’s ok...God recognizes how limited our understanding is of his splendor and majesty. So, take time to worship this God of the Bible...on your own and with other believers this Sunday. He is great and powerful and is master of all that is out there. And he is the one who declares that he is just crazy in love with you...and wants you to spend eternity with him. And in that eternity, then and there we will finally learn How Great is our God.
Here’s our Bible verse for today...
Psalms 147:5 NLT How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!
Remember I’m praying for you!
