Daily Devotional #1,592

I started watching an old “Doctor show” on Amazon Prime while I’ve been putting miles on my stationary bike. I have to put a lot of hours in each week and part of the time I will tune in to this show. I don’t know how accurate their diagnoses and treatments are, but it is the process of trying to figure out what is actually wrong with people makes it more like a detective show. I was watching and peddling the other day and the case was of a middle-aged man who all of a sudden had no filter on what he said. Whatever was in his mind...that’s what came out of his mouth. Needless to say, there were a lot of hurtful things that came out to friends and family...and even the doctors. The show needs drama so they had to try all kinds of stuff and of course they thought they were going to lose the guy at one point. And finally, the hero figured out that there was some kind of growth that was pressing against a part of the brain, causing all of this. But the surgery was deemed extremely dangerous because of the location in the brain. But the guy who had this was so distressed because what was coming out of his mouth was just crushing the people around him. He decided that it was worth the risk to do it. Well, it all worked out well and he went home with his loving wife and daughter. But when it was over, I thought about what the Bible says about us and what comes out of our mouths. James wrote in his letter (James 3:8-10 NLT) “ But no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. (9)
Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. (10) And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!” The Bible is telling us that we all have that problem. And it is because of a growth we have in our brains...and our souls. It is called sin. We don’t have to comment on everything and to every person as we go through our days. And we are called to control what comes out of that mouth. And if we find that there are so many things that are hurtful and unhelpful in our minds...and our brains...then we need to spend some serious time with God and have him do some spiritual surgery on us. God wants us to keep our tongues from speaking evil. He is not asking us to tell lies, but to turn away from evil and do as much good as
we can while we can. Remember, almost always this is not something for a medical doctor to help us with...it is this Jesus who heals our hearts, transforms our minds and our thinking and then fills us with his love and kindness for others. Go out and enjoy life and seek to see many happy days...and don’t take that away from the people around you by the way you speak!

Here’s our Bible verse for today...

1 Peter 3:10-11 NLT For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. (11) Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.

Remember I’m praying for you!
