I got in the car and the thermometer showed that it was 116 outside! They say that people talk about the
weather, but don’t do anything about it. I have a team that decided yesterday that we would. This Sunday we
are going to celebrate Christmas…in July! The trees are set up, the wreaths will go up in the next day or so and
the nativity scene will be set out up front. We have Hostess “snowballs” for after church with fudgesicles
instead of hot chocolate. And we are looking for as many Christmas inflatables as we can get! I remember that
we had a foreign exchange student from New Zealand when I was a kid and she told us that December 25th is in
the middle of summer. So, their tradition was to open presents and then everyone would take their Christmas
trees down to the beach for the rest of the day to celebrate with friends and family! It is going to be fun, but
different to hear the Christmas story without hearing about sleigh rides and snow and presents and Santa. I love
Christmas and I love that time of year, but Sunday we will hear again the wonder of that first Christmas without
all the other stuff that we tie to it. The account of how God became flesh and dwelt among us is one that we
need to hear again and again. And the joy of the history, the excitement of the meaning of it all and the comfort
of our favorite Christmas Carols will allow us to experience Christmas in a different and maybe even clearer
way. So if you are looking for some Christmas spirit or just a way to thumb your nose at the triple digit
heat…come on down and join in celebrating Christmas in July!
Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Luke 2:8-11 NLT That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. (9) Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, (10) but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. (11) The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!
Remember I’m praying for you!
