I was watering down at church and there was a bare patch that was just mud and I stepped in it and it just
squished under my shoe. A memory came back to me of a thing I loved to do with kids when I was a Youth
Pastor. We would flood a field…for days…until it was a muddy mess and then we would bring out a group of
kids and we’d play games together in that sticky mud. It was fun…the cleanup…not so fun. At one church I
did that, it was pretty icky and smelly mud and when I arrived home, my wife wouldn’t let me in the house!
She told me to wash myself down with a hose in the backyard and then take off my clothes and run for the
house. I did and got in the shower and got cleaned up. But the clothes…well, they didn’t make it. She just
threw them in the trash. She said that it wasn’t worth the time or the risk of ruining our washer to fool with
them. All that came back to me that day and I thought about how we gave up on getting those clothes clean.
We humans are constantly getting covered with the mud of our own sin. It might have seemed fun at the time,
but we are faced with the same prospect of being turned away at the door of what was intended to be our
home…heaven. The good news of the Bible is that even though all of us are in the same boat…muddied
beyond belief with our sin, God doesn’t desire to throw us away. He has a way to make us clean so that we can
“come into his presence”, into his house. There was a little song that we learned in Vacation Bible School so
many years ago and it went like this…
“What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but
the blood of Jesus
Oh, precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow…no other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”
No matter how deep and dirty and smelly that mud that you and I have been rolling around in, he can make us
clean by accepting what this Jesus of the Bible did for you and me on the cross. So, remember you are not a
“throw away” to God. You and I are worth the price of getting cleaned up, forgiven and redeemed so that we
will never be turned away from God’s door.
Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Hebrews 10:22 NLT …let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
Remember I’m praying for you!
