Today is the 4th of July…our country’s birthday! I am always struck by reading the Declaration of Independence, it begins with a statement of what this is and why it is written. And then there are the abuses that have been levied on the people of America. But it is the end that always kind of takes away my breath. It goes like this… “We, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States; that they are absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political Connection between them and the State of Great-Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” In the moment that it was signed…a new nation was born. In that instant we became the United States of America. There was a long and costly war that would be fought, but the document ends with a firm reliance on God’s protection and God’s provision for the future. And those who put their lives on the line believed that God would come through for this nation that had been born there in Philadelphia in 1776 and because they believed that they pledged not only their lives, but their fortunes and their sacred honor. God was indeed in all of this and to answer the question that is asked way back in the Old Testament “Who has heard of such as this? Who has seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be delivered in an instant?” The answer for the last 247 years is “yes”…if godly people trust the God of the Bible…because nothing is impossible for him.
