Daily Devotional #1,527

I was looking at a scripture for Sunday and there was a verse in 1 Peter 3 about clothing yourselves with beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is so precious to God. In the King James Version that “gentle” part of the verse is translated as “meek”. I checked out the meaning of that word and it has the connotation of meekness…but not weakness. It is saying that our gentleness doesn’t come out of helplessness but infers that there is power there that is not used against another. I thought about what that meant and I remembered a guy I knew years ago who was a Naval officer who commanded two different submarines. This was during the “cold war” and he commanded a “boomer” that was loaded with missiles armed with nuclear warheads. He told me that his mission was to sail undetected, close to Russia and sit some miles away from the great port and city of Vladivostok and should war between the two great superpowers break out, his target was the city. He told me that all he had to do was get one of the missiles within 2 ½ miles of the target. And if he did, there would be no city, no port and very few survivors. He held tremendous power in his hands…but thankfully never was called to use it against an enemy. And when his “watch on station” was done, he would quietly head back home with a full load of those weapons. That’s close to what is being said in the Bible. When you are meek, it never means that you are weak. It means that you have the power to bring pain or even destruction to another…but because of your love for God…you now love those who mistreat you and bless those who choose to be your enemy. So remember that every time you say “no” to wreaking havoc on someone who has mistreated you or acts like your enemy…you can choose to take the power you have in Christ and respond with a gentle and quiet spirit. And when you do, God sees in you, and what you did, something that is precious to him. And that is always a good thing.

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

1 Peter 3:4 NLT You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.

Remember I’m praying for you,
PJ
