I’m doing a memorial service for a friend of mine who I had not really seen for nearly a quarter of a century.
She and her husband moved to Alaska to be with family, and I figured to have one more adventure in their lives.
He passed away and then she eventually moved to Arizona. I had a handful of conversations with her over the
years and always appreciated her partnership with me in ministry. But time and space and a multitude of other
relationships dulled so many of those memories. Now, as I talk to her family, so many different memories have
come back and I remember again what a special person she was in my life so many years ago. It is easy to
forget those who have loved and given to us when time and new people and new challenges have filled our
lives. I thought about that and then how often I don’t just sit in awe and wonder at the sacrifice that another
friend made for me. His name is Jesus…and he gave his life for my life. He knew that you and I would be
flooded with “stuff” in our lives and that even his great sacrifice on the cross could dim in our memories. And
so, on the night that he went to that cross, Jesus, at the Passover Meal, took bread and blessed and broke it and
gave it to his disciples and said “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me”. And
then after the supper Jesus took a cup and said this cup is the new covenant between God and his people, sealed
with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you. And later, the Apostle Paul would write that “As
often as you eat of this bread and drink of this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he returns”. We cannot
forget what the Jesus of the Bible has done for us on the cross. And this act, taking the Lord’s Supper or
Communion, is a reminder to our hearts and minds and souls of how great a God we have. And how deep his
love for us really is. Because this is one act, by one person that we can never afford to forget.
Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Luke 22:19 NLT He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Remember I’m praying for you,
