Daily Devotional #1,504

I remember my dad telling me a story about his mom, my grandmother. She was a single mother, raising a son in the middle of the depression and life was tough for them. They finally got an apartment of their own but the job that my grandmother had left things really tight financially. One day dad had been out playing baseball with a group of guys and came home for dinner. There was only one plate of food waiting at the table and my dad asked where hers was. My grandmother told him that he was a little late, so she’d already eaten. He wolfed down his meal so that he could get back out with the guys to get another hour or two of summer baseball. He ran out and then realized that he’d forgotten his baseball glove in the apartment. He ran back and burst into the apartment and found his mom eating what he had left on his plate. She had only enough for one meal, and she made sure that her son was fed, and she would take whatever was left. We are coming to that time in our year when we will honor our moms and dads with a day set apart for them in our society. Our parents weren’t perfect, and some did their job poorly. But the Bible says that we are to honor our father and mother. And one thing that we always will have to remember is that we don’t know the full extent of the sacrifices that our parents made for us. We don’t know what handicaps they brought to their experience as your mom or dad that were laid on them by their parents. So, as we come up to this day of honoring moms first and dads in a few weeks, remember there may be a lot more to the story that you saw played out before you in your life with them. So, whether they are still with you or have passed away, take a moment to look for the good that they brought to your life. One of the greatest sins a child can ever have is ingratitude. Honor your father and mother.

Here’s our Bible verse for today…

Exodus 20:12 NLT “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you."

Remember I’m praying for you,
