I remember when I was a kid, the pastor came by our house to check on something with my dad. He was busy
and so I sat on the couch with our minister and just talked. I think he was just making conversation with me and
asked, “So what do you want to be when you grow up?” Well, I was ready to answer that one. I wanted two
things in life. One was to play football and the other was to satisfy my fascination with airplanes. So, I told
him I wanted to play football and I wanted to fly airplanes. I think I elaborated much more than that, because I
remember the pastor just patiently listening. When I ran out of stuff to say and got quiet, the pastor said “That
is really something. But tell me, what do you think God wants you to do when you grow up?” I don’t know
what I said to that, but I remember being dumbfounded by the question. I thought “What does God have to do
with what I want to do in life?” Looking back, I realized I didn’t have a clue about God or life. But that’s the
way a lot of us still act…even as followers of Jesus. So often we decide what we are going to plan and do and
accomplish…and never think about whether or not that is what God wants. And of course, the logical question
is why would God care? Well, first God loves us and does indeed have a plan for each one of us. And second,
God has the power to control our lives and will lead us if we will let him. And thirdly, every day that we live is
a gift from God. Not everyone will get this new day. But if you are reading this…you were given that gift! So,
remember that if you are looking for purpose, fulfillment and success in life…ask God what his plans are. They
are liable to really surprise you. It sure did me!
Here’s our Bible verse for today…
James 4:14-16 NLT How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. (15) What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” (16) Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.
