I killed something this week because of neglect. I had good intentions, but I got distracted by other things and I
didn’t do what I had promised myself I would do. It wasn’t a person or a pet…it was my new sourdough
starter! I bake a lot of bread and I wanted to branch out and try baking sourdough. To do that you need to
either be given some sourdough starter or start it yourself. I read up on how to do it and was pretty excited.
Each day you have to faithfully add a specific amount of flour and then water to the starter and then mix it
up…every day apparently. I got distracted and busy with other things…and it died…I guess of sourdough
starvation. So now I have to start all over again. I made a commitment to do this and just didn’t get it
done…and for now…no sourdough for me! As I was washing out my container, I thought about how our lives
can be like this. When we come to this Jesus of the Bible, we are called to grow in him. So how do we do that?
Well, the Bible says that we need to crave the pure spiritual milk so that we can grow into a full experience of
salvation. We need to take the time continually to meet in prayer with this Jesus and to read the encouragement
and direction that is given in the Bible. And then we are fed by meeting with other believers on a regular basis.
And what happens if we don’t? Well, we kind of start starving, spiritually, inside. And when you are starving
you cannot grow beyond or even sustain the level of spiritual health that you have now. The good news is that
we can start all over in this growth process, just like my new starter will. So, if you’ve let your spiritual life
wither away from lack of food, start feeding it. And it begins with you and I hungering for the things that God
offers. Make that commitment to get going and get growing. I’m going to do that too. And on top of that, I’m
going to begin a new batch of sourdough starter…and start producing bread!
Here’s our Bible verse for today…
1 Peter 2:1-3 NLT So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. (2) Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, (3) now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.
Remember I’m praying for you…
With love, PJ
