The great 49er quarterback, Joe Montana, tells a wonderful story about something he started doing while he was playing football. He did this while waiting to go back in on offense as the quarterback and he had been talking with coaches in the “press box” on top of the stadium about what they saw was happening on the field. At the time the communication between the bench on the field and the guys upstairs was done by a phone. The coaches had hung up and he had the phone in his hand and wondered if this was a real phone. So, to get an outside line what do you do? You dial 9. He did and he got a dial tone! He wouldn’t say what stadium he was in, but he decided to call his wife while he was waiting to get back out on the field! He calls her and she is stunned and asks where he is…and he tells her that he was on the bench ready to play. And then he tells her that he called, from this particular stadium. She giggles and asks why is he doing this and he replies… “I just wanted to tell you I love you!” They both had a wonderful laugh together…and she loved it. And he said that he tried that at every stadium he played in! I thought about that. Here he was so motivated to speak to this one he loved that he took every opportunity…even while playing football on Sundays…to call his wife. Wouldn’t it be great if we had the same commitment and energy to call up God…from wherever we are, whenever we can? I know God would love to hear our voices as we pray our thanks to him and let him know we love him…but also to make that call on behalf of folks in our lives who we know are in need of prayer. So, Joe Montana wasn’t too busy to make that call to the one he loved during a professional football game…so we ought to interrupt our lives for just a bit to make that call, through prayer, to that one who loves us so very much and never gets tired of hearing our voices of thanks and praise and hearing our requests for ourselves and others. And the good thing about it is that we don’t even have to look for a phone! Here’s our Bible verse for today…
Romans 1:9 NLT God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night I bring you and your needs in prayer to God, whom I serve with all my heart by spreading the Good News about his Son.
Remember I’m praying for you!
