I grew up watching Disney’s “Davey Crockett” on TV. Fess Parker was Davey Crockett and Buddy Ebson (later of the Beverly Hillbillies) played his buddy George Russell. And like thousands of my generation, I had the coonskin cap that I wore proudly. My Dad and I watched the end of the Davey Crockett movie with him fighting at the Alamo and he said, “You know, you are related to Davey Crockett!” I was stunned…how could I be related to this legendary figure? He went on to say that our family tree connected with his mother and because of that I was, in a sense, a child of Davey Crockett. What I didn’t realize was that probably a whole bunch of the United States could find a connection like that too. But it still is exciting to think that I’m in some way connected to him. I’ve thought about how those kinds of connections are important to people. And the greatest connection we can have is to be related to this God of the Bible. The Bible reminds us that we are all part of God’s creation and truly loved by him. But we have a make that relational connection to him on our own. We don’t show up on planet earth as children of God…but the Bible says that to anyone who believes in this Jesus who died and was resurrected from the dead on Easter, and accepts him, are given the right to become children of God. All we need to do is to say “yes” to God’s offer of forgiveness and he does all the rest! A lot of people in our country are not related to Davey Crockett and if you aren’t…well, there is nothing you can do about that. And there are a lot of people who are not children of God…and there is nothing to keep anyone from becoming one. You want to be a part of the most famous and most lasting family of all? Just believe and accept this Jesus of the Bible and you are related to the most famous person in human history…and in all of eternity too. God wants everybody to have the chance to be able to claim that they are indeed a child of God. Here’s our Bible verse for today…
John 1:9-13 NLT The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. (10) He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. (11) He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. (12) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (13) They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
Remember I’m praying for you!
